#HRMixTape2018 – People Champions Make the Workplace a Better Place

Since launching my blog early last month, I’m taking on my very first blog challenge! Mark Hendy, a fellow HR guru/blogger, is the creator of something called, #HRMixTape2018. You might be wondering what an #HRMixTape2018 is? It’s exactly what it sounds like, a mix tape, except with a twist! The #HRMixTape2018 is about creating content that is #HR centric, yet connects to five pieces of music. This is a real treat for all you music fans out there following my blog.

Before we get into #HRMixTape2018, let’s look at the term “Human Resources”. It advocates a sense of human touch. Needless to say, those of us who work in HR, have a passion for working with others. In fact, the day-to-day responsibility of an HR professional consistently revolves around interacting with people, and this is why we are known as a People Champion.

A People Champion is defined by the power of these words:

  • A warrior who will fight for all of humanity;
  • A hero who will rise to the occasion to lift others up,
  • A believer who sees that most people really are good, when given a chance to shine.

As you listen to this powerful #HRMixTape2018, I challenge you to find your voice, make an impact, and be a champion for all of humanity.

Carrie Underwood – The Champion

I am invincible, unbreakable
Unstoppable, unshakeable
They knock me down, I get up again
I am the champion
You’re gonna know my name
You can’t hurt me now
I can’t feel the pain
I was made for this, yeah, I was born to win
I am the champion

HR was born a people champion. We are warriors. We are heroes. We are believers. HR, the change agents of the organization, we champion people and help them understand the elements behind the change; we guide them to the other side. So whether you are a department of one, or twenty, we play a vital role in the organizations we support and lead. You see, we’re not quitters, we are people-persons with a purpose. We are HR – #HRonPurpose.

Andra Day – Rise Up

All we need, all we need is hope
And for that we have each other
And for that we have each other
We will rise
We will rise
We’ll rise, oh oh
We’ll rise

HR is a Hero in disguise. We rise to the occasion to lift others up. Sometimes, we as HR professionals make mistakes (we’re human too), but it’s how we handle those mistakes and our ability to get up, dust ourselves off, and try again that makes us truly heroic.

We rise by lifting others – Robert G. Ingersoll

Rachel Platten – Fight Song

Like a small boat
On the ocean
Sending big waves
Into motion
Like how a single word
Can make a heart open
I might only have one match
But I can make an explosion

HR professionals like me have a distinctive perspective into the organizations we support. It is a big part of our job, and it’s more than having a strong understanding of our company’s priorities and challenges. We have the ability to influence the future of our organization based on the employment decisions we make. HR is not just an internal role; we play an external role too. One of the most impacting external roles of HR is fighting for our voices to be heard on public policies that impact the workplace. It’s called the SHRM A-Team. This group of HR professionals is using their voices to “help advance effective workplace public policy and strive to move our profession forward”. Just like in the lyrics of “Fight Song”, HR is “like a small boat on the ocean, sending big waves into motion”.

Luke Bryan – Most People Are Good

I believe most people are good
And most mama’s oughta qualify for sainthood
I believe most Friday nights look better under neon or stadium lights
I believe you love who you love
Ain’t nothing you should ever be ashamed of
I believe this world ain’t half as bad as it looks
I believe most people are good

HR, the talent developers, believes that if people are given a chance to shine, they will also believe in themselves. We believe people are at the heart of every organization. We believe that balance is important, such as work-life balance for all employees. We’re champions for creating cultures that are inclusive, diverse, and employee centric. We link people to business results. Because when you take care of your people, they will take care of your customers.

Michael Jackson – We Are the World (USA for Africa)

We are the world
We are the children
We are the ones who make a brighter day
So let’s start giving
There’s a chance we’re taking
We’re taking our own lives
It’s true we’ll make a brighter day
Just you and me

Now this is one of the most influential songs of all time, and just like the song, HR makes the workplace a better place for all employees.  Have you heard of the term “Servant Leadership”? It is a concept that has been around for centuries. Robert K. Greenleaf invented the term, “Servant Leadership” in an essay he published in 1970, titled, The Servant as Leader.  HR is a “servant leader”. Because our role focuses on the growth and well being of people and the workplace they work in each and every day. The message behind the song, “We Are the World” is so powerful, and what is even more powerful is the collaboration it took to create such an amazing song. If there is one profession that has collaboration like “We are the World”, it’s HR. You see, there is a beautiful #HRTribe that has emerged, and the collaboration behind this great group of talented HR professionals/leaders is phenomenal. We are a community that is moving HR forward and making an impact in our profession!

The servant-leader is servant first, it begins with a natural feeling that one wants to serve, to serve first, as opposed to, wanting power, influence, fame, or wealth. – Robert K. Greenleaf, Servant Leadership: A Journey into the Nature of Legitimate Power and Greatness

I hope you enjoyed this #HRMixTape2018, and even learned a thing or two about HR. I feel I am one of the lucky ones because had it not been for life changing my direction, I would not be doing what I love to do – working with organizations to improve them as a whole, while working along side employees to help them grow and excel.
